In 2019, Michigan State University Extension received Rural Opioid Technical Assistance (ROTA) funding to support their project titled, Michigan Substance Use Prevention Education and Recovery (MiSUPER). The MiSUPER team collaborated with the MSU College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) and the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) to increase awareness of opioid misuse in rural communities regarding prevention, addiction treatment options, and recovery support.
Through MiSUPER, MSU Extension developed standardized state-of-the-art training that centers addiction as a public health issue and brain disease, as well as the result of social inequities and widespread systemic oppression. These trainings have been delivered to community members, health care providers, and community health professionals.
MSU Extension has also published a variety of print and online materials that address the rural opioid overdose crisis. Check out some of MSU Extension’s resources by clicking the buttons below.
You can learn more about this project and programs offered by MSU Extension by visiting the MiSUPER website.
The Michigan ROTA-RC project is being led by Dr. Lauren Kennedy, a state specialist in community behavioral health for MSU Extension’s Health and Nutrition Institute. She is joined by MSU Extension health educators, Abigail Cudney, Tanner Derror, and Elizabeth Williams.
